Bar Kokhba (132-135 AD)
The first battles against the Roman presence in the province of Judea were resoundingly successful.
The Jewish camp was led by a certain Bar Kokhba. He had a great influence on his people, so much so that many, not the least, recognized him as the messiah foretold in the biblical texts. He was even credited with miracles and other extraordinary manifestations, which struck a chord with the people won over to his cause. The new prince of Israel followed the efforts of his generals with great attention, writing to them incessantly on every subject. It was important not to lose the flame of this war of liberation. One of the major thrusts of the new state, which the new Jewish leader, also known as Shimon, Prince of Israel, was recreating, was the establishment of a reliable economic system capable of compensating for the hindrances of war. This meant having the necessary means to hold out against the siege undertaken by Rome.
