Israel

Ancient Israel is often associated with biblical accounts, which describe the Israelites as descendants of a single family, divided into twelve tribes. These tribes united to form a kingdom, which later split into two kingdoms: Israel in the north and Judah in the south. Archaeology suggests that these sedentary societies emerged in the last centuries of the 2nd millennium BC, after the collapse of the great Egyptian and Hittite empires.
